Michael S. Harper

Today I was introduced to the poet Michael S. Harper by way of his obituary (1938 – 2016) in the New York Times. Then on to read other materials and watch him deliver some of his work on YouTube. He was a house of a man who wrote poetry with the cadences of Jazz music. This is from his poem “Dear John, Dear Coltrane”

“the inflated heart
pumps out, the tenor kiss,
tenor love:
a love supreme, a love supreme—
a love supreme, a love supreme—”
He had a terrific voice, literally and figuratively, and he seemed to be imminently sensible. …dh
